As the Akwa Ibom State sports sector continues to bask in the renaissance of the arise era, the state ministry of sports is welcoming more harvest of medals from different sports in quick successions.
The latest came on Tuesday, August 18, when the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey received two table tennis players, Ofonime Moses Edoama and Bright Aniekan Bassey, who distinguished themselves with Silver and Bronze medals in a tournament hosted by the Offiong Edem Foundation, in Calabar, Cross River State.
Receiving the duo, Bassey who was elated at the development, commended the players for working hard to attain podium positions in the championship.
While emphasizing how much other sports have contributed to the pride of the state in sports, the sports boss who commended the efforts of the State Table Tennis Coach, Sir Aniefiok Alexander, and appreciated the state Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, for his support in making sports excel even at international level. He recalled how three indigenes of the state , products of the state sports festival excelled in the recently held Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
“…for every opportunity I have I will appreciate His Excellency the Governor ,for the sports renaissance that is going on in the state through his support.
“When I was appointed the commissioner for sports, football dominated, but now other sports are breathing and breathing well”,the commissioner said.
Earlier,the state table tennis coach, sir Aniefiok Alexander had, while presenting the athletes,appreciated the sports commissioner for his backing to bring about their participation in the tournament.
Bright Aniekan Bassey and Ofonime Edoama won silver and bronze medals, respectively,at the 6th edition of the Offiong Edem Table Tennis Foundation Championship which happened from 13th -15th of August 2026, at the U J Esuene Stadium, Calabar.
