Syria’s armed forces said a military base near the Lebanese border came under artillery attack by the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, state media reports yesterday said.
According to the state news agency, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) report, several shells landed near the town of Serghaya, northwest of the capital Damascus, citing the Syrian military command.
No immediate reports of casualties or damage were reported.
The development came amid shifting political dynamics in Syria.
The former government of longtime ruler Bashar al Assad maintained close ties with Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.
However, the country’s new leadership under interim President Ahmed al Sharaa has moved to reduce Iranian influence in Syria since taking power.
Tehran was one of Assad’s key allies during his rule.
At the same time, authorities in Lebanon were facing growing international pressure to enforce the disarmament of Hezbollah.
Tensions in the region remain high, with Hezbollah and Israel once again exchanging fire.
The Israeli military has carried out renewed heavy strikes, particularly in southern Lebanon.
