Popular social media sensation Akinpelu Babatunde Adigun, better known as Tunde Perry, is currently in the eye of a storm after a clip from his TikTok Live began circulating widely online.
What started as a raw, emotional reaction to the Super Eagles’ painful semi-final exit against Morocco quickly spiralled into controversy. Visibly disappointed by Chukwu Eze’s missed penalty, Perry, speaking in Yoruba, made a sweeping statement that many interpreted as blaming a the igbo ethnic group for Nigeria’s loss: “The Igbos are always the cause of destruction in Nigeria.”
In the heat of football heartbreak, emotions often run high, but for many Nigerians, the remark crossed a familiar and sensitive line. Social media erupted with outrage over what was perceived as an unnecessary, tribal-tinged comment.
To Perry, we understand the need to trend, however, unity remains non-negotiable, though football may sometimes break hearts.
