A Lagos-based private medical facility, Euracare Hospital, is once again at the centre of public scrutiny following fresh allegations of medical mismanagement by popular fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani: reviving painful memories of the hospital’s past controversy linked to the death of the son of celebrated author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Lawani, founder of Tiannah Empire, took to her Instagram page late Sunday to recount what she described as a harrowing medical ordeal after undergoing surgery at the hospital. In a series of emotional posts, the celebrity designer alleged that the procedure, which she said cost close to ₦100 million, left her with life-altering complications.

“I can’t speak or walk properly again,” Lawani said, claiming that shortly after the surgery she lost the use of her legs and developed a severe lung infection. According to her, her condition deteriorated rapidly, forcing doctors to carry out multiple emergency interventions.

She alleged that she suffered bleeding in her lungs soon after the initial operation and was rushed back into surgery the following day. The situation, she said, worsened when she reportedly stopped breathing, prompting doctors to puncture her lungs in an emergency procedure, an intervention she claimed damaged her vocal cords and left her unable to speak properly.

Lawani further alleged that after being discharged, she lost the use of both legs entirely and had to be readmitted to the same hospital. Seeking outside help, she said she contacted an ear, nose and throat specialist in the United Kingdom, who advised that another procedure be carried out to remove a tracheotomy tube and assess whether she could breathe independently.

According to Lawani, she was eventually flown to the UK with her family, where further examinations allegedly revealed infections and lumps in her lungs, necessitating yet another surgery. She said she has remained in and out of hospital since then due to ongoing complications.

Her allegations have reignited public debate around Euracare Hospital, which previously came under intense public spotlight following the death of multiple award winning writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s son, a case that triggered widespread outrage, grief, and questions about medical care standards at elite private hospitals. While the circumstances surrounding that tragedy have not been fully ventilated in the public domain, the episode left a lingering stain on the hospital’s public image and heightened sensitivities around patient safety and accountability.

Lawani accused the hospital of prioritising financial considerations over patient welfare and said she intends to pursue legal action once her health improves.

As of the time of filing this report, Euracare Hospital has not issued any official response to Lawani’s allegations.
