Not everyone gets the rare privilege of being applauded publicly by the Ooni of Ife. During the 10th coronation anniversary celebration of Oba Enitan Ogunwusi Adeyeye, Ojaja II, held in Ile-Ife, Osun state, the atmosphere was already heavy with royalty, pageantry and reflection. Then came a moment that quietly stole the spotlight.
The Ooni, stepping away from ceremony and titles, chose gratitude. He took out time to openly commend Chief John Ayeni — former Managing Director of Skye Bank and MD of Aso Savings — and urged the crowd to do the same.
What followed wasn’t just praise; it was a story.
In his words, the Ooni recalled a time before he became king, a time when belief mattered more than crowns.
“Before I became Ooni,” he said, “for some reason, he believed in me and held on to that belief. He said the throne needs a lot of money, and he will support me.”
