“Every woman is a prostitute; it depends on whose prostitute you are. I don’t believe in one man, one wife. Many Nigerian men are married to one woman because of wetin pastor go talk.”
With those few words, veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, fondly known as KOK, once again reminded Nigerians that age does not always come with silence. The statement was dropped during an almost theatrical interview with popular skit maker and interviewer, Isbae U Barbie, but like most things in Nigeria, what started as banter quickly turned into a national debate.
Social media, as expected, did not waste time. Some Nigerians nodded vigorously, whispering “he’s not lying” behind their screens. Others clutched their Bibles tighter and concluded that the veteran actor must have been “under an influence.” After all, how dare anyone question a system many are already struggling, some failing, to uphold?
Some comments read:
Cheemahumeh: sometimes it’s good to keep quiet and keep your respect.
Elegah_david: Every woman is not a prostitute, na u go carry the one wea be prostituted,na all this kind mindset una dey put on some young guys they mk dem they cheat up and down.
Kadibeautycraft: If every woman is ashi* then every man is an extremely ashi* as well sir. Wasn’t expecting that from you of all people 🤦‍♀.sometimes it’s better to keep quiet with such mentality than opening
Yet, beneath the sarcasm and viral soundbites, KOK’s statement touched a sensitive nerve. It exposed the quiet hypocrisy that often lives behind well-ironed suits on Sundays and family portraits on Instagram. A society where tradition, religion, and personal desire are constantly at war, and everyone pretends not to notice the casualties.
Whether you agree with Kanayo O. Kanayo or not, one thing is certain: he said what many think but are too polite, or too prayerful, to say out loud. And in a country where truth is often sugar-coated to avoid offence, KOK served his raw, unapologetic, and slightly sarcastic… just the way entertainment columns love it.
