“The Situation in Nigeria Is Heartbreaking,” Says US Congressman as Nigeria-US Mull New Security Framework

United States Congressman Riley Moore has described the security and humanitarian situation in Nigeria as heartbreaking, revealing that the US and Nigerian governments are close to finalising a strategic security framework to confront Boko Haram, ISIS, and other violent threats across the country.

Moore, who recently visited Nigeria as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation, said the team held what he described as positive and productive discussions with Nigerian authorities aimed at strengthening security cooperation.

In a post on X on Saturday night, the American lawmaker recounted harrowing encounters with victims of insurgency and communal violence, saying the human cost of insecurity in Nigeria left a lasting impression on him.

“What I witnessed during my trip to Nigeria was heartbreaking,” Moore said.
“I met a woman who witnessed all five of her children murdered in front of her.
“Another woman lost her husband and two daughters and had her unborn child killed.”

According to him, the proposed US–Nigeria security framework is designed to tackle the Boko Haram and ISIS threats in the North-East, while also addressing broader security challenges in other regions of the country.

“We did have positive conversations with the Nigerian government, and I believe we are close to a strategic security framework to address both the ISIS and Boko Haram threat in the Northeast, as well as the genocide against Christians by the radical Fulani Muslims in the Middle Belt,” Moore stated.

The congressman further disclosed that a detailed report from the delegation’s visit would be submitted to United States President Donald Trump, outlining possible pathways for deeper collaboration with Nigeria to curb violence and protect vulnerable communities.

“The report that I will present President Donald Trump with outlines paths to work with the Nigerian government to end the slaughter of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” he added.

Moore’s comments come amid renewed international attention on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and the humanitarian toll of insurgency, banditry, and sectarian violence across several parts of the country.
