In the broader context of Nigeria’s growth, the South-South region has consistently been a mix of promise and challenges. This area is crucial to the nation’s economy, yet its communities face serious issues related to underdevelopment. However, the situation is poised to improve. Recently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), and this move is more than just a new policy; it symbolizes hope and a renewed dedication to addressing past inequalities. It is essential to take a moment to acknowledge President Tinubu’s impressive leadership here. By establishing this commission and appointing a governing board and management team studded with experience, talent, and integrity, he has taken a significant step towards unlocking the potential of the South-South region.
A unique mission and vision: It is essential to recognize the SSDC’s role within the broader framework of development organizations. Unlike other bodies that have their areas of focus, the SSDC has a clear and forward-looking purpose. Its mission isn’t just about addressing past issues; it’s about building a diverse economy that can move beyond oil. The SSDC aims to actively expand access to agriculture, collaborate with the states on tourism, lay emphasis on capacity building for information and communication technology, and develop new sectors like the Blue Economy. This strategic approach is crucial for laying a new economic foundation for the South-South region, one that ensures prosperity is widespread and sustainable.
A strong leadership team: The effectiveness of any organisation greatly relies on its leadership. In this regard, President Tinubu has made excellent choices. The SSDC is led by a management team that brings unique experiences relevant to understanding the challenges and recognizing the opportunities in the region. At the helm is Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, who previously served as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. He has a long history of advocating for the development of the Niger Delta and played a key role in passing important legislation like the NDDC Bill and the initiation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Local Content Bill. His thorough understanding of national laws and expertise in maritime law, combined with experience in the private sector, give the SSDC the political savvy and strategic insight to navigate complex challenges and establish meaningful partnerships.
Working alongside him is Ms. Usoro Offiong Akpabio, the Managing Director, a political scientist and analyst who has a deep understanding of the region’s economic and social issues. She has a strong background in policy and grassroots development. Her commitment to community development is also evident through her philanthropic efforts, which earned her the 2019 African Achievers Award. She’s dedicated to enhancing human capital development, ensuring transparency, and focusing on community-centered initiatives that have a real impact on people’s lives. The SSDC also benefits from the expertise of Engr. Preye Aganaba, who serves as the Executive Director for Social and Human Capital Development. As an entrepreneur, he applies a results-oriented mindset to address capacity development for women and youth. His focus on practical skills training, digital literacy, and encouraging entrepreneurship will help empower young people to take practical steps that will change their life trajectory for good. In charge of Corporate Services is Dr. Timi Alari Ayibatonye. With experience as a university lecturer and previous roles with the Delta State Government, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the SSDC. His efforts will ensure that the commission has a well-trained and capable workforce that mirrors the efficiency and effectiveness the agency is expected to project.
The team is further enriched by other accomplished appointees, like Hon. Marcus Nie Eji, serving as the Executive Director for Projects; Hon. Joseph Ugheoke, overseeing Commercial and Environmental Development and Amb. Sony Abang is the Executive Director of Finance. This perfect blend of law, engineering, business, and diplomacy is a tremendous advantage for driving progress in the region.

Looking to the future: Turning promise into reality

With such a strong team in place, the SSDC has tremendous potential. The commission now needs to act swiftly and decisively to achieve key objectives:
First, Launching an Infrastructure Revolution: Focusing on vital projects like interstate highways, deep-sea ports, and other interventionist efforts. Drawing inference from the existing development master-plans of the BRACED Commission and the six states in the region will enable the SSDC identify gaps and prioritize efforts in a coordinated manner.
Second, Promoting Economic Diversification: Creating agro-processing zones, industrial parks, and tourism corridors to generate wealth beyond the oil sector.
Third, investing in People: Initiating robust vocational and technology-focused education programs to develop a skilled workforce ready for the modern economy.
The establishment of the SSDC represents a turning point. The support from the president, combined with the capabilities of the management team, has sparked hope for the region’s future. However, it’s also crucial for state governments, community leaders, citizens, and other stakeholders to rally behind the commission.
If the SSDC is led with the integrity, innovation, and inclusive spirit showcased by its leadership, it may become the catalyst for the transformation of the South-South into a hub of peace, productivity, and abundant prosperity.
The success of this initiative will depend not only on effective governance but also on the active participation of the local populace.
