FCT Police Deny Reported Attempt on Navy Lt. Yerima’s Life, Urge Public to Ignore ‘False Alarm’

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media that Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, the now famous navy officer who stood up to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over an Abuja land dispute, was trailed by unidentified persons in two unmarked Hilux vans in Kubwa on Sunday evening, calling the claims “false information” capable of causing public panic.

According to earlier accounts attributed to military sources, the officer was allegedly followed from the NIPCO filling station off the Kubwa Motorway through Gado Nasko Road by the occupants of two Hilux vans, prompting him to execute escape manoeuvres to evade them. The incident was said to have triggered a security investigation within the military.

Responding to the reports, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said no such incident had been reported or recorded in the Federal Capital Territory.

“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt Ahmed Yerima,” she said. “The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.”

Adeh urged residents to disregard the claims and refrain from sharing unverified stories that could create unnecessary fear. She also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police division, providing the Command’s emergency contact numbers—08032003913 and 08068587311—for prompt response.

However, a national newspaper reported that the military has deployed personnel and patrol vehicles to the Gado Nasko Road area of Kubwa following concerns raised over the alleged trailing of Lieutenant Yerima. According to the report, at about 7 p.m. on Sunday, a convoy of eight military vehicles was observed patrolling the Gado Nasko axis, an operation believed to be linked to ensuring the safety of the officer involved.

The trailing incident, reportedly occurring around 6 p.m., involved two unmarked Hilux vans whose occupants, described as men dressed in black, allegedly followed the officer from the NIPCO Station off the Kubwa Expressway to Gado Nasko Road. The development was said to have prompted the swift deployment of military security assets in the area.

While the police have urged calm and denied any record of an assassination attempt, military authorities are reportedly continuing internal checks to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
