Oluremi Tinubu Donates N1bn to Benue Violence Victims, Calls for End to Killings

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated N1 billion and essential relief materials to victims of violent attacks in Benue State, calling on residents to end the cycle of violence and return to peaceful coexistence.

The donation was made through her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), during a visit to Makurdi on Monday, where she met with victims, community leaders, and the Benue State Government.

“I am here today to condole with the Benue State Governor, Rev. Father Hyacinth Alia, and the good people of the state,” Mrs Tinubu said. “I am deeply saddened by the killings that have occurred in recent weeks, especially in Yelwata and Dauda communities, which led to devastating casualties and destruction of properties, homes, and livelihoods.”

She lamented that Benue, once renowned as a haven of peace, had tragically become a theatre of bloodshed. “It is more worrisome that people who have lived together in harmony are now turning against each other. This must stop,” she urged.

Highlighting Benue’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, she described the state as central to the nation’s food security. “Benue State is the nation’s food basket because of its rich and diverse agricultural produce,” she said, appealing to the people to embrace dialogue and patience in resolving disputes.

“As a mother, I urge you all to bury any grievances and return to cordial and peaceful coexistence. Violence solves nothing. The way of peace is the way of love, and love remains the greatest power on earth,” the First Lady added.

Mrs Tinubu announced that the N1 billion donation was aimed at assisting displaced families to rebuild their lives, return to work, and regain their dignity. “On behalf of the governing council of RHI, we are making this donation to help families get back on their feet. Our motto remains: ‘Towards a Better Life for Families.’”

She also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and influential figures in Benue to support the government’s peacebuilding efforts.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, in his remarks, expressed deep gratitude to the First Lady for her continued show of solidarity with the people of Benue. “The killings of our people speak volumes. Yet, you have chosen to identify with us, to console us, and to bless us. This is not the first time you are here. Your consistency of love is deeply appreciated,” the governor said.

He lauded Mrs Tinubu for her numerous interventions, especially for women across Nigeria, and assured that the state government would continue working towards restoring lasting peace.
