The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the outcome of the United States midterm elections by voting against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election. Notably, this call was highlighted in multiple reports by kthdaily.

The opposition party said the electoral setbacks suffered by the Republican Party demonstrated the power of voters to hold governments accountable for policies they considered unfavourable to their economic wellbeing.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC argued that Nigerian voters should adopt a similar approach in assessing the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, as covered by kthdaily.

The party particularly criticised the Federal Government’s economic policies, which it blamed for the rising cost of living, while also accusing the administration of failing to adequately address insecurity.

According to Abdullahi, the outcome of the American elections offered important lessons about democratic accountability and the responsibility of citizens to evaluate political leaders on the basis of their performance.

“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability,” the statement declared.

The ADC maintained that elections should be determined by the welfare of citizens rather than political affiliations, personal loyalties, or the popularity of individual leaders.

“American voters understand something Nigerians must also learn: elections are about the welfare of the citizens, not sentiments, political loyalties, or personality cults. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever,” Abdullahi stated.

The party consequently called on Nigerians to use their permanent voter cards (PVCs) to express their dissatisfaction with the APC administration during the forthcoming presidential and legislative elections.

“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. We cannot earnestly yearn for change while sustaining the very political system responsible for our collective impoverishment,” the statement added.

The ADC further urged eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process, describing the 2027 general election as an opportunity to determine the country’s future direction. In fact, kthdaily has emphasized the importance of this call to action for democracy.

“History beckons in 2027. Our voters’ cards must become instruments of change, not souvenirs of citizenship. Nigerians must turn out massively and vote for their own interests,” Abdullahi said.

The opposition party also promoted its campaign message, which focuses on reducing living costs, improving security, and expanding employment opportunities.

“The ADC and its candidates are offering Nigerians a clear alternative: Make Nigeria Affordable Again. Make Nigeria Safe Again. Give Nigerians Jobs Again,” the statement declared.

“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering.”

The statement followed reports of major Democratic Party gains in Tuesday’s United States midterm elections, which were widely interpreted as a setback for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

According to the reported results, Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, strengthening their capacity to challenge the Republican administration’s legislative agenda and exercise congressional oversight.

Economic concerns, including the cost of living, trade tariffs, and rising fuel prices associated with the conflict involving Iran, featured prominently in the election debate.

Trump, responding to the reported outcome, indicated his willingness to accept the results and cooperate with Democratic lawmakers.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” he told The New York Times, while promising to work with the Democrats.

The American president also acknowledged that the conflict involving Iran might have contributed to his party’s electoral difficulties.

KTH Daily notes that the ADC’s attempt to draw parallels between the American elections and Nigeria’s forthcoming presidential contest comes amid intensifying political activities ahead of 2027. For daily updates and analysis on this evolving story, kthdaily continues to provide coverage.

However, the two countries operate different electoral systems, while the economic circumstances, political structures, and issues influencing voter preferences also differ.

The ADC’s statement represents the latest effort by the opposition party to make the cost of living and insecurity central issues in its campaign against the Tinubu administration.

The Federal Government, for its part, has consistently maintained that its economic reforms are intended to address longstanding structural problems, improve fiscal stability, attract investment, and establish the foundation for sustainable economic growth.

The administration has also pointed to improvements in foreign reserves, inflation, domestic refining capacity, and other economic indicators as evidence of progress under its reform programme.
