The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several operators involved in illegal National Identification Number, NIN, enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion in Abuja.
The Commission also seized enrolment equipment during an enforcement operation in Gwagwalada and other locations.
Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, in a statement on Monday said the operation was carried out by NIMC’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit, ICEU.
He said the exercise shows the Commission’s resolve to end unauthorised enrolment, extortion and circumvention of official procedures, which threaten the integrity and security of the National Identity Database.
According to NIMC, many challenges faced by NIN holders come from attempts to bypass established procedures.
The Commission stressed that NIN enrolment must be done only at approved enrolment centres, while data modification should be done via its self-service platform at http://www.nimc.gov.ng.
It urged NIN holders to download the NINAuth app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store to secure their records, print NIN slips and access other benefits.
Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated NIMC’s zero-tolerance for extortion and unethical conduct, saying the Commission remains committed to seamless NIN services.
NIMC advised the public to use only approved channels and obtain information from its official website and verified social media handles.
