Popular Nigerian blogger Tosin Silverdam has criticised content creators who venture into movie production, accusing some of them of releasing poorly made films on YouTube.
Silverdam shared his thoughts on Instagram, expressing frustration with what he described as the growing trend of content creators becoming movie producers without adequate training or understanding of the craft.
“Everybody want to be a movie producer, producing mediocre films on YouTube. You’ll be watching their movie on YouTube and you’ll just be hissing,” he wrote.
The blogger argued that content creation and filmmaking require different skills, insisting that popularity on social media does not automatically translate into the ability to produce quality movies.
“All the content creators wan be producer. Content creating is different from movie production,” he added.
Silverdam also questioned the filmmaking experience of some creators, alleging that they come together to produce films without proper theatrical training before uploading them to YouTube.
“They don’t even have any theater training, they will just come together and produce rubbish and put it on YouTube. I’m tired abeg,” he said.
His comments have brought attention to the growing overlap between social media content creation and Nigeria’s film industry, particularly on YouTube, where creators increasingly use the platform to release movies and reach audiences directly.
The debate raises questions about the difference between online popularity and filmmaking expertise, as well as the importance of storytelling, technical skills and professional experience in producing quality films.
