“I Was Mocked for Having a Child Out of Wedlock” — Sophia Momodu Speaks on Finding Her Voice

Sophia Momodu has opened up about the challenges she faced after becoming pregnant outside marriage, describing how public scrutiny and negativity affected her ability to speak about her experiences.

Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Momodu reflected on her journey as the daughter of a pastor who had a child with a global superstar.

“I was a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. I was mocked; it was crazy. I had to find my strength in the midst of all of that,” she said.

Momodu explained that although she was famous, she struggled to have her voice heard because of the negative attention surrounding her story.

“For the longest time, I didn’t have a voice. I was famous, popular, but I didn’t have a voice; it kept getting drowned out by the negativity around my story,” she added.

She also recalled an incident in which an aunt asked her to remain silent about her experience, claiming that she was told it was not a subject Black women were allowed to discuss openly.

Momodu said sharing her story eventually encouraged other women to come forward and reveal similar experiences.

“So many women came to me to share it happened to them. People will attempt to silence us, but it is important to tell our stories as women. It matters,” she said.

Her speech highlighted the importance of women reclaiming their voices, sharing personal experiences and challenging the stigma surrounding issues often considered taboo.
