…US court records detail a 2003 bloody assault on lover as questions mount over Karl Von Batten’s real identity

Karl Von Batten, the Washington lobbyist being paid under a $1.2 million-a-year contract to strengthen former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s reputation in the United States, has a criminal conviction arising from a violent assault on a former girlfriend, United States court records have revealed.
The revelation adds a deeply troubling dimension to the growing scrutiny surrounding Von Batten, founder of Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., whose firm was retained to promote Atiku’s standing among American policymakers and counter narratives favourable to the Nigerian government.
A July 3, 2008 judgment of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals identifies Von Batten under the name “Karl M.E. Okeke” and records in graphic detail the July 2003 assault on his then-girlfriend, Cynthia D. Murphy.
The appellate court described Okeke as having “violently assaulted” Murphy after an argument at his apartment.
According to the judgement, Okeke dragged Murphy by her arms and legs, repeatedly struck her in the face, kicked her and pushed her against a wall.
The assault left Murphy with a black eye, swollen face, cuts inside her mouth and bruises on her face, neck and arms.
Fearing another attack, Murphy locked herself inside a bedroom, called 911, and eventually climbed through a window onto an outside ledge, where neighbours helped her down.
She later sought treatment at George Washington University Hospital.
The criminal case culminated on 10 December 2003, when Okeke was sentenced to 180 days in jail following a misdemeanor bench trial for assaulting Murphy.
The prison term was suspended, but he was placed on one year’s probation, ordered to stay away from Murphy, perform 50 hours of community service, undergo domestic violence counselling, and contribute to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.
The details are particularly damaging for a lobbyist whose multimillion-dollar engagement with Atiku centres substantially on reputation, strategic positioning, and access to American policymakers.
Von Batten-Montague-York was retained by Atiku this year under an agreement filed with the US Department of Justice pursuant to the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
The agreement provides for fees totalling $1.2 million annually and states among its objectives the protection and strengthening of Atiku’s “reputational standing” in Washington and engagement with members of Congress, executive branch officials, and other US policy actors.
The emergence of the assault conviction is likely to intensify scrutiny of the man Atiku’s political operation has entrusted with that assignment.
Questions have also followed the lobbyist’s use of different versions of his name.
The 2008 appellate judgement identifies him as Karl M.E. Okeke, while his more recent professional identity is Karl Von Batten or variants incorporating both Okeke and Von Batten.
His LinkedIn profile has reportedly identified him as “Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten.”
The court records, however, leave little ambiguity about the Karl M.E. Okeke involved in the assault case: the judgement records his conviction and sentence arising from the attack on Murphy.
Von Batten has recently faced further questions over claims concerning his standing in Washington.
His lobbying firm reportedly deleted a social media announcement claiming that US President Donald Trump had appointed him to a White House presidential commission. No corresponding White House announcement confirming the purported appointment had been publicly identified at the time of the report.
The scrutiny comes only months after Atiku hired Von Batten-Montague-York to help shape his image and political positioning in Washington ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
The underlying $1.2 million engagement is independently supported by the firm’s FARA filing with the US Department of Justice, which describes government affairs, policy positioning and reputational strategy work for Atiku.
