Lagos State produced a dominant showing in the volleyball finals of the ongoing South West Zonal Elimination for the 2026 National Sports Festival, winning both the men’s and women’s titles to secure automatic qualification for the national competition.
In the men’s final, Lagos defeated Ondo State 3–1 in a competitive four-set encounter, winning 25–18, 24–26, 25–20, 25–20.
Lagos made a strong start, taking the opening set 25–18, but Ondo responded in the second set, edging a closely contested battle 26–24 to level the match.
The Lagos side, however, regained control in the third set, winning 25–20 before closing out the match with another 25–20 victory in the fourth set.
The women’s final provided an even tighter contest as Lagos overcame Oyo State 3–2 in a five-set thriller.
Lagos claimed the first set 25–18, but Oyo fought back to take the second 25–22. Lagos then regained the advantage by winning a tense third set 28–26.
Oyo refused to go away, responding with a 25–16 victory in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set.
With the championship at stake, Lagos held their nerve in the tie-break, winning 15–8 to secure the women’s title.
Oyo finished as runners-up in the women’s category.
With victories in both finals, Lagos State have secured automatic tickets to represent the South West at the 2026 National Sports Festival in both the men’s and women’s volleyball events.
Chairman of the Lagos State Volleyball Association, Kayode Ladele, thanked the team for making the state proud as he revealed that focus has now shifted to getting the team ready for the National Sports Festival.
