Manchester City began Enzo Maresca’s Premier League reign with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.
Bournemouth stunned the hosts in the 26th minute when Marcus Tavernier finished a quick attacking move to put the visitors ahead. City dominated possession but struggled to turn their control into clear-cut chances as Bournemouth defended resolutely.
The home side continued to press after the break, with Maresca introducing changes as City searched for an equaliser. Their persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when Marc Guéhi rose to head home from a corner and level the contest.
City then completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time. Josko Gvardiol found the net to send the Etihad into celebration, with the goal initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision.
The victory gives Maresca a winning start in his first Premier League match in charge of City, while Bournemouth were left to rue surrendering their lead so late in the contest.
The result also provides City with an important boost after their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield and amid major changes to the squad following Rodri’s departure to Barcelona.
