President of the Lekki Scrabble Club, Samuel Anikoh has described reigning Lekki Scrabble Classics champion, Abdulmumeen Jimoh, as an inspiration to young players.
Anikoh disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.
Commending his performance, he said Jimoh’s discipline, humility, commitment and determination to improve, had made him a good example for aspiring scrabble players.
He also highlighted the strong bond and healthy rivalry between Jimoh, Enoch Nwali and Timilehin Doko, describing the trio’s progress as “enviable”.
“The current champion is an example to a lot of young players. He is a diligent, disciplined and humble person, with laser focus on becoming a better player everyday.
“Interestingly, he is part of the strong trio of musketeers, with Enoch Nwali and Timilehin Doko. The extraordinary way the trio have continued to push each other to be better, is enviable.
“I suspect they have the potential to dominate the world stage, if they continue on the same trajectory,” he said.
Anikoh recalled that Jimoh dominated the 2025 Lekki Scrabble Classics, taking an early lead and maintaining it to win, after 18 gruelling games.
He said Jimoh’s focus had also helped him improve and win several competitions, including the recent Gov. Duoye Diri competition in Bayelsa.
According to him, Jimoh narrowly missed out on the African championship to his friend, Doko, but has continued to win other scrabble events.
With the 2026 classics scheduled for Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, the club president expressed excitement over the envisaged quality of the competition.
He noted that Jimoh was expected to return to defend his title.
Anikoh however warned that top players from Nigeria and other countries would be targeting him, especially with the tournament’s top prize increased to 1,000 dollars.
He also disclosed that the club would introduce a section for children at the 2026 classics, building on its school scrabble programme.
According to him, the section will give players below age 12, an opportunity to experience competitive scrabble early.
Speaking further, he added that Jimoh’s development as an early starter, highlighted the benefits of introducing young players to the game at an early age.
He said the initiative was part of the club’s commitment to developing the next generation of Nigerian scrabble champions.
