WAMUFAT/NSSF Annual Sports Fiesta Begins in Ogun

The second edition of the WAMUFAT/Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) Annual Sports Fiesta began on Tuesday at the Agroterra Sports Complex in Jega Orile, Ogun.
The five-day camp, which will end on Aug. 8, has attracted more than 300 students aged between six and 16 from the South-West.
It is organised by WAMUFAT Youth Sports Development in partnership with the NSSF, with support from the management of the Agroterra Sports Complex.
Declaring the camp open, the traditional ruler of Owu Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Saka Matemilola, urged the participants to make the best use of the opportunity to develop their talents and improve their sporting skills.
He also called on governments at all levels to give greater attention to school sports, describing it as the foundation of every successful sporting nation.
Founder of WAMUFAT, Fatimo Mohamed, said the decision to sustain the initiative after its successful maiden edition in 2025 was driven by her passion for giving back to society and creating opportunities for young people.
“I am excited to return and give back to the community that shaped me. This camp has shown that we can produce educated champions, and we believe it is an initiative that will continue for many years.
“I sincerely appreciate everyone involved because this is not a one-person effort. Many people have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this vision a reality,” she said.
The President of the NSSF, Olabisi Joseph, described the partnership with WAMUFAT as a major boost for school sports in Nigeria.
She urged more well-meaning individuals and organisations to support grassroots sports development through similar initiatives.
“I am delighted that this camp has returned for its second edition. I commend Fatimo Mohamed and her team for their commitment to sustaining this initiative.
“I am confident this year’s edition will build on the success of the maiden event. We believe the students will benefit greatly from the combination of sports and education, which is essential to developing the total child.
“At NSSF, we will continue to partner with organisations and individuals committed to advancing school sports,” Joseph said.
Chairman of Agroterra Resort, Abdulrasheed Afonja, reaffirmed the facility’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote sports and education.
“I look forward to hosting more editions of this camp because supporting initiatives like this was one of the key objectives behind establishing this facility.
“I hope it continues to grow and remain sustainable so that we can discover and nurture talents for Ogun and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
The organisers said the camp would expose participants to quality coaching while combining sports activities with educational and character-building programmes.
The participants will receive free coaching in athletics, football, chess, netball, golf, ayo and tennis, as well as mentorship and leadership development sessions.
The programme will be rounded off with a Community Race Day on Saturday.
The camp is built on the belief that every child deserves access to the life-changing benefits of sports.
The programme combines sports training with a daily values-based curriculum centred on gratitude, respect, excellence, teamwork, resilience and integrity.
Experienced coaches and mentors are expected to guide the participants throughout the week, helping them build discipline, confidence and self-belief before they showcase their progress during the Community Race Day.
