Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu says Nigeria will not underestimate tournament debutants, Malawi, ahead of their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday.
Madugu made the declaration at the pre-match news conference in Rabat on Monday, stressing that every team that qualified for the tournament deserved respect.
“We have huge respect for all our opponents. Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and respect.
“Yes, they are debutants, but they are a very good side. We don’t take anything for granted.
“Everybody is here with a purpose and a mission, so you don’t undermine or underestimate what anybody can do.
“We are here to defend the WAFCON trophy. The team is fully ready, and we will stick to our game plan and our mission,” he said.
Nigeria, the defending champions and Africa’s most successful women’s national team, will begin their title defence against the Scorchers of Malawi at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat.
The Super Falcons are seeking a record-extending 11th WAFCON title after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in a dramatic final at the previous edition.
Although making their tournament debut, Malawi are expected to provide a stern test, with highly-rated sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga leading their attack.
Coach Lovemore Fazili’s squad also includes experienced players such as Ireen Khumalo, Olivia Phikani, Benadetta Mkandawire, Rose Kadzere, Letticia Chinyamula, Faith Chinzimu, Vanessa Chikupira and Deborah Henry.
Nigeria captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, is expected to lead the Super Falcons, while reigning African Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Chiamaka Nnadozie, is set to marshal the defence.
Nnadozie is expected to operate behind Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin and Rofiat Imuran in the defensive line.
Deborah Abiodun and Halimatu Ayinde are also expected to start in midfield, with Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, likely to lead the attack.
Nigeria also have quality options on the bench, including Jennifer Echegini, Toni Payne, Christy Ucheibe, Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide, Folashade Ijamilusi, Glory Ogbonna and goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor.
The Super Falcons will seek maximum points before facing Zambia in their second Group C fixture and Egypt in their final group match.
Tuesday’s encounter will kick off at 9 p.m. Nigerian time at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat.
