The Association of Nigerian Universities Alumni (ANUA) has called for the development of a 25-year strategic agenda aimed at repositioning university education in Nigeria for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
The call was made at the association’s 2nd Quarter General Assembly held at Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna, under the theme: “Rethinking University Education in Nigeria: The Imperative for Developing a 25-Year Agenda.”
According to a press statement by the National Public Relations Officer, ANUA, Malam Suhailun Maccido issued on Sunday, the gathering brought together alumni leaders and representatives from 25 universities across the country to deliberate on long-term reforms for the nation’s higher education sector.
According to the release, the conference provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategic issues including educational planning, university governance, alumni engagement, research and innovation, as well as partnerships involving universities, government, industry and development organisations.
It however stressed the need for continuity in educational policies and stronger institutional frameworks capable of responding to emerging national and global demands.
It emphasised the importance of improving academic standards, expanding institutional capacity and promoting innovation to produce graduates equipped for national development and international competitiveness.
“A major outcome of the assembly was a renewed commitment by alumni associations across the country to support the development of a comprehensive long-term framework for university education.
“The proposed agenda is expected to strengthen policy consistency and create a more coordinated approach to educational development over the next 25 years.
“The conference also recorded increased collaboration among university alumni groups, particularly through efforts to strengthen the Northwest Alumni Presidents Forum,” the release read.
ANUA said the initiative would encourage institutional cooperation, information sharing and collective advocacy on issues affecting higher education.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with governments at all levels, university managements, regulatory agencies, development partners and the private sector to advance quality, accessible and globally competitive university education.
It added that deliberations would continue through technical sessions, policy discussions and stakeholder presentations, with recommendations expected to shape its future advocacy and engagement efforts.
