Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has paid glowing tribute to his late predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a symbol of integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law, 16 years after his passing.
In a reflective message on Tuesday morning, Jonathan said the anniversary of Yar’Adua’s death offers a moment for national introspection and a reminder of the values that defined his leadership. He recalled their time in office as one built on a shared vision of an inclusive, united, and just Nigeria.
Jonathan noted that Yar’Adua governed with “quiet but profound conviction,” stressing that the late president believed strongly that the strength of any nation lies in its respect for the rule of law and the sanctity of the electoral process.
He further highlighted Yar’Adua’s humility in leadership, saying he consistently placed national stability above personal or political considerations, a trait he described as rare among those in positions of power.
The former president also pointed to Yar’Adua’s efforts in peace-building as one of his most enduring legacies, noting that he demonstrated courage in acknowledging national challenges and sincerity in addressing them.
According to Jonathan, the life and leadership of Yar’Adua remain instructive for current and future leaders, particularly in emphasising transparency, accountability, and genuine commitment to the welfare of citizens.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to rededicate themselves to the ideals the late leader stood for, adding that his contributions to nation-building continue to resonate years after his death.
Jonathan concluded with prayers for the repose of Yar’Adua’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.
