The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, to Force Headquarters in Abuja following the shocking extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, ignited widespread outrage after a viral video showed the handcuffed suspect pleading for his life before being shot at close range. His lifeless body was then reportedly dumped into a police vehicle by operatives at the scene.

Confirming the development, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act as a gross violation of Force Order 237 and the police’s standard operating procedures. Authorities said the police team had acted on intelligence that Ogidi was attempting to ship a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition when he was apprehended.

However, ASP Usman, who led the operation, allegedly opened fire on the already restrained suspect, killing him instantly.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the officer was immediately arrested, questioned, and moved from Asaba to Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee and possible prosecution.

The Command reiterated its zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings and pledged to ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile, activist Harrison Gwamnishu has raised concerns about the officer’s past, alleging a history of similar conduct and warning against any attempt to shield other officers who may have been involved.

Police authorities, however, maintain that only ASP Usman has been identified as the officer who pulled the trigger and confirm he remains in custody as investigations continue.
