Ope Famakin, who proudly describes himself as Nigeria’s biggest food critic, has never shied away from controversy. From his early days as a social media troll to carving a niche as a blunt restaurant reviewer, Ope has consistently thrived on critique, banter and the ever-watchful eyes of Nigerian social media.
However, it seems the critic has found a new playground.
In a six-minute video shared online, Ope revealed his latest venture into fragrance reviews, disclosing that he had purchased a perfume worth ₦160,000 from the wife of popular nightlife and fashion influencer Yhemolee. Throughout the video, however, he repeatedly referred to the brand owner simply as “Yhemolee’s wife”, never mentioning her name.
While testing the fragrance, Ope pointed out that the inscription on the perfume bottle was peeling off. At one point, he paused mid-review, smiled sheepishly and remarked, “I won’t say anything, I like Yhemolee o,” a comment many felt spoke volumes.
Unsurprisingly, the repeated mentions did not go unnoticed. Yhemolee later responded via his Instagram story and this time, he was anything but gentle. The fashion entrepreneur criticised Ope’s approach, stating that if one truly respects someone, brand feedback should be sent privately rather than aired publicly in a way that diminishes the effort behind the work.
Hi Ope, what are we critiquing next?
