As promised and to the relief of both critics and curious onlookers, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, Lead Pastor of David Christian Center, showed up right on time at exactly 9:00 p.m. on 2 February, to address the matter that has kept Nigerian social media unusually holy and heated: his tattoo.
For 88 uninterrupted minutes on Instagram Live, the cleric, fondly called Pastor K, held court, not to beg for public forgiveness. Instead, he made one thing clear from the outset: he owes no one an explanation. Still, in what he described as an educational gesture, he decided to talk, largely about faith, freedom, and why his skin is apparently nobody’s business.
According to Pastor K, the shock surrounding his tattoo says more about modern Christianity than it does about his choices. He boldly claimed that God Himself has tattoos, citing biblical references, and went further to name respected global teachers of the faith, including Joyce Meyer, who also bear ink. If his tattoo unsettles anyone, he warned cheerfully, they should fasten their seatbelts, because more tattoos are coming.
The session took on a reflective turn as the 50-year-old preacher traced his journey from the streets to the pulpit, painting a picture of a man shaped by grit, grace, and an unapologetically unconventional calling. He described himself as “sent differently,” insisting that his ministry exists to dismantle the idea that Christianity must be boring.
With scriptures in hand and sarcasm lightly sprinkled, Pastor Kingsley made his case: faith does not expire at the sight of body art, and salvation is not threatened by ink. Whether Nigerians agree or not, one thing is certain—Pastor K has succeeded in doing what many preachers only pray for.
