“Investigations revealed that Shariff Umar played a central role in recruiting, preparing, and dispatching suicide bombers, as well as coordinating logistics and the delivery of IED components,” Uba said.

The Army explained that Umar functioned as both a recruiter and handler, identifying vulnerable individuals, indoctrinating them, and supervising the final stages of their deployment to targets.

Military investigations established that Shariff Umar personally coordinated the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, at the height of Christmas-season movements and worship.

The attack, carried out during prayers at the crowded market mosque, was intended to exploit the festive atmosphere, when security vigilance is often strained by large civilian gatherings.

The Army further revealed that the same network was responsible for a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, Yobe State, highlighting the cross-state operational reach of the cell.

“This confirms that the Gamboru Market bombing was not an isolated incident but part of a broader campaign of terror planned by the same coordinator,” Uba said.
