Fidelity Bank Plc has appointed Amaka Onwughalu as its new board chairperson, following the completion of the tenure of its former chair, Mustafa Chike-Obi.
The appointment was disclosed in a filing with the Nigerian Exchange over the weekend and signed by the company secretary, Ezinwa Unuigboje.
According to the disclosure, Chike-Obi, a non-executive director and board chair, stepped down from the board on 31 December 2025 after completing his tenure, in line with the bank’s governance and board rotation policy.
Fidelity Bank said the board recorded notable progress under his leadership, with growth across key financial indices and the successful execution of the bank’s strategic objectives. The bank noted that several major milestones were achieved during the period, in alignment with its long-term vision and expansion plans.
The board and management expressed appreciation to Chike-Obi for his service and contributions to the growth and development of the institution during his time on the board.
As part of its board succession planning framework and to ensure continuity in leadership, the board approved the appointment of Onwughalu, an existing non-executive director, as chairperson with effect from 1 January 2026. The bank said the Central Bank of Nigeria has been formally notified of the appointment, as required by regulation.
Onwughalu brings several decades of experience in banking, financial services, and corporate governance to the role. She previously served as group managing director of the former Mainstreet Bank Limited, where she played a key role in stabilising the institution and led its integration with Skye Bank Plc following sector reforms.
She later served as deputy managing director at Skye Bank Plc, a position she held until her retirement in July 2016. Since then, she has remained active in the financial services space and is currently the chief executive officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited.
Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, a master’s degree in corporate governance from Leeds Metropolitan University, also in the UK, and a master of business administration degree from the University of Port Harcourt.
In addition to her formal education, Onwughalu has undertaken executive, leadership, and business development programmes at several global institutions. These include INSEAD in France, IMD Business School in Switzerland, Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, Columbia Business School in the United States, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Harvard Kennedy School, and the Institute of Directors in Nigeria.
She is a senior fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors of Nigeria and a fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Institute of Directors. She is also a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.
Beyond her corporate career, Onwughalu is known for her involvement in mentoring initiatives, particularly those focused on the girl child, as well as programmes aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs and professionals as contributors to Nigeria’s economic development.
She is a Paul Harris Fellow and has received several recognitions over the course of her career. These include the National Merit Award for Accountability and Transparency, the Award of Excellence and Distinction for Financial Management, and the Vocational Service Award from the Rotary Club of Enugu.
Fidelity Bank said her appointment reflects its commitment to strong corporate governance, leadership continuity, and the effective oversight of its long-term growth strategy.
