Ex-Council Chair Wants Constitutional Roles For Traditional Rulers In Governance

A former Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State, Mr Wasiu Adesina, said traditional leaders need to be given constitutional roles to play in governance in the country.
Adesina made the call during a courtesy visit to the palace of a traditional ruler, Oba Kabiru Shotobi (The Ayangburen of Ikorodu) in Lagos.
He said that the visit became necessary to showcase the important place of traditional leaders and institutions in the society.
“Their roles are important, particularly in areas like security, development, and peace-building.
“I recount the relationship between my administration and the Oba in the last 10 years.
“The Oba’s support and advice helped in governing the people of Ikorodu.
“His leadership and encouragement have always been a source of inspiration to me and all who are privileged to serve our great community,” he said.
Adesina said that the traditional ruler contributed to the inauguration of some projects like the Salvation Army Primary School and Solomade Street among others in the area.
“These projects help in ensuring that our children are well educated and the people enjoy good roads.”
Adesina said that the growth of Ikorodu and unity of its people remained a cause leaders in the community should always commit to.
In his response, the traditional ruler expressed gratitude to God and indigenes of Ikorodu for their contribution toward the development of the community.
He commended the former council chairman and his team for what they achieved during their tenure.
The traditional ruler urged Adesina to support the current LG chairman to continue from where he (Adesina) stopped.
“I appreciate the former LG chairman for contributing to the development of the community.
“Let us continue to work together to build our community and society at large, “ he said.
Shotobi said that collaboration among leaders such as the traditional rulers, LG chairman, security agencies, was vital for the area’s progress.
The traditional ruler received a leadership award from the former chairman and his team.
