Former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has been endorsed by northern leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as their consensus candidate for the party’s National Chairmanship ahead of the November convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The announcement was made late Wednesday in Abuja by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, following a meeting of northern PDP stakeholders. Fintiri said the decision came after extensive consultations among party leaders across the region.

He, however, noted that the endorsement does not bar other aspirants from contesting at the convention.

“Anyone who feels otherwise is free to test their popularity at the polls,” Fintiri said.

The decision follows weeks of intense lobbying and deliberations among prominent PDP figures in the North. Before the endorsement, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and Turaki had been locked in a tight race for the top position.

With this latest development, Turaki emerges as the North’s preferred candidate heading into the national convention, a key event expected to shape the PDP’s direction and internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
