The Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the release of ₦10 billion to clear part of the pension arrears inherited from previous administrations — a decisive move by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to fulfill his promise of easing the hardship faced by retired workers.
The meeting, held on Thursday at Government House, Asaba, was presided over by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, on the directive of Governor Oborevwori, who is on an official engagement outside the state.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, alongside the Commissioners for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen; Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, said the EXCO deliberated on several impactful policies covering social investment, infrastructure, and governance reforms.
Aniagwu explained that the ₦10 billion disbursement was a clear demonstration of Governor Oborevwori’s compassion for pensioners and his resolve to address inherited obligations.
“At today’s meeting, we approved the disbursement of ₦10 billion to begin offsetting pension arrears. A special committee has been constituted to ensure the funds reach genuine beneficiaries transparently and without interference,” he stated.
He noted that the move aligns with the administration’s MORE Agenda, which places citizens’ welfare at the heart of government priorities, especially senior citizens who served the state diligently.
Aniagwu further revealed that the EXCO also reviewed timelines for major infrastructure projects, including two key flyovers in Agbor (Uromi Junction) and Ughelli (Otovwodo Junction), being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
According to him, “The completion period for the Agbor flyover has been reduced from 24 to 18 months, while that of Ughelli has been shortened from 24 to 14 months. These adjustments are designed to deliver the projects ahead of schedule, ease traffic, and stimulate economic growth.”
The council also considered the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), presented by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, as part of preparations for the 2026 budget, which will soon be laid before the Delta State House of Assembly.
Aniagwu disclosed that EXCO terminated several non-performing contracts to ensure accountability and quality delivery of public projects. “Some contractors have not met expectations despite prompt mobilization and payment. The governor has made it clear that value for money is non-negotiable,” he said.
He cited the Igbodo Junction–Ubulu-Uku to Ogwashi-Uku Road project as one of those affected, noting that it will be reviewed and re-awarded to a competent contractor as part of Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to opening up rural communities across all 25 local government areas.
The Commissioner also announced the council’s approval for the formal presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Engr. Mike Oghenovo Orugbo, Okporua I, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, following his installation by the kingdom’s kingmakers.
Reaffirming the administration’s focus on transparency, people-oriented governance, and infrastructural renewal, Aniagwu stressed that Governor Oborevwori remains unwavering in his commitment to improving the lives of Deltans.
“Governor Oborevwori has said repeatedly that every project must deliver tangible benefits to the people. Where contractors fail, we will act decisively in the interest of Deltans,” he emphasized.
Aniagwu assured that the administration will continue to prioritize human welfare, infrastructure, and institutional reforms that guarantee sustainable growth, equity, and prosperity for all.
