An 18th minute own goal by Richard Ríos proved decisive and spoiled José Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge yesterday as Chelsea defeated Benfica 1-0 in their Champions League Matchday 2 clash.
It was an emotional return for “The Special One” to the club he led to three Premier League titles. The London crowd sang in his honor in the opening minutes, which was acknowledged by Mourinho. A little later, the Chelsea faithful were cheering again, this time for a 1-0 lead.
Chelsea were the only Premier League side to earn a Champions League win yesterday ad Liverpool fell 1-0 to Galatasaray as Victor Oshimen’s 16th-minute penalty was the difference.
Tottenham, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Bodø/Glimt, thanks to an 89th-minute own goal by Jostein Gundersen. Jens Petter Hauge put Bodø up 2-0 by the 66th minute, but that was answered by Micky van de Ven two minutes later.
