The National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria (NABMON) has called on the Federal Government to intervene in the persistent increase in the price of cement in the country.
The Lagos State Chairman of NABMON, Mr Rasheed Aleshinloye made the call during Lafarge sensitisation and support to members of the association at Igbe Laara area of Ikorodu in Lagos.
Aleshinloye described the rising cost of cement as an emergency that required urgent attention by the government at all levels.
He said the increasing demand for cement, due to its growing use in road constructions had pushed the prices beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerian.
“Cement is a critical ingredient for housing and road construction in Nigeria, performing a fundamental role in constructing foundations, floors, walls, and other structural elements.
“We are appealing to the federal government to intervene over the persistent increase in the price of cement to make home ownership more accessible,” he said.
Aleshinloye told NAN that some members of the association have closed their businesses due to the increase in the price of cement.
According to him the situation had also triggered increase in house rent indirectly, thereby making some people homeless.
He advised members to adhere to moulding standard blocks as directed by the regulating agency, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to reduce incessant building collapse in the country.
He urged the federal government to issue importation license to organisations that are willing to engage in the business of importation of cement to create competition among stakeholders.
Ealier, NABMON chairman of Igbe Laara, Elepe unit in Ikorodu, the organiser, Mr Adeboye Asela, appreciated Lafarge for providing motorcycles for the members.
He said this would assist members to convey their blocks and advised members to adhere strictly to quality standards of block moulding.
