Nigeria’s maritime sector gaining global recognition – Oyetola

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said that Nigeria is embracing cutting-edge technology and streamlining port operations to meet international standards and position itself as Africa’s leading maritime hub.
Oyetola, who revealed this while congratulating the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho on his recent election as Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH), reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to support its stakeholders and representatives on global platforms to help them fulfill their mandates effectively.
The minister noted that Nigeria’s maritime sector has continued to gain international recognition by producing credible and visionary representatives.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr Bolaji Akinola, the minister described Dantsoho’s election as a commendable achievement.
IAPH is a global organisation that serves as a consultative body to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and other United Nations agencies.
It brings together more than 300 ports and port-related businesses across 90 countries, playing a key role in shaping international port policy, promoting sustainable development, and encouraging global collaboration on maritime challenges.
“The election of Dantsoho is both a tribute to his leadership and a recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in global maritime affairs,” Oyetola said.
He noted that Dantsoho’s new role in such a prominent international body would be instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
“This development reflects the significant progress made under the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme and the broader push to grow the blue economy,” he added.
Oyetola further emphasised that Dantsoho’s appointment validated Nigeria’s commitment to building a more efficient, secure, and competitive maritime sector, key elements of the country’s economic growth strategy.
He expressed confidence in Dantsoho’s ability to make meaningful contributions to the IAPH, while also amplifying Nigeria’s voice in shaping global maritime policies and fostering stronger international cooperation.
