The Bayelsa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has paid glowing tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London, describing him as a transformative figure in Nigerian politics and a leader whose legacy will endure for generations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Bayelsa State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, said Buhari redefined political leadership in Nigeria through a rare blend of military discipline, civilian statesmanship, and unwavering commitment to national service.
“In a world where politics is often defined by elitism and standoffishness, the late President Muhammadu Buhari stood out as a unique example of a statesman and influencer who was popular with the masses and respected by the elite,” the statement said.
“He was a leader who embodied the values of courage, discipline, integrity, and compassion.”
Buokoribo highlighted Buhari’s persistence in his political journey, noting that he contested the presidency four consecutive times, in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015, before finally achieving victory.
“It was sweet victory, one that changed the course of politics in the country, being the first time that an incumbent president would lose to the opposition,” the APC spokesperson said.
The statement praised Buhari’s strategic political style, which combined the “discipline and nerve of a soldier” with the “diplomacy of a politician,” and recalled the key moments of his long public service career.
“In the military, Buhari held several important command and staff positions, as well as political appointments during his distinguished military career,” it read.
These included appointments as Military Secretary, Member of the Supreme Military Council, Military Governor of the defunct North Eastern State, Federal Commissioner of Petroleum Resources, Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), General Officer Commanding both the 4th Infantry Division and the 3rd Armoured Division.
Buokoribo also recalled Buhari’s post-military career as Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), noting that the agency under his leadership made infrastructural impact felt across the country.
Describing the former president as a man of “quiet strength and unshakable resolve,” the Bayelsa APC said Buhari connected effortlessly with both the poor and the powerful.
“He was a friend of the poor, and a rallying point for the elite,” Buokoribo stated.
“His lifestyle of humility, transparency, and simplicity are virtues that will continue to inspire generations for a long time.”
The Bayelsa APC joins other Nigerians and international observers in mourning the former president, whom they described as “a towering figure of moral strength” in the nation’s history.
President Muhammadu Buhari, 82, passed away at a London hospital after a prolonged illness. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, following a military stint as Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
