Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital at the age of 82. The news sparked an outpouring of tributes from leaders across political, traditional, and international circles, recognising Buhari’s life of service and his impact on national and continental affairs.

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), described Buhari’s death as a deeply personal loss. “He was my friend, my brother, and my course mate,” Babangida said in a moving tribute. “We shared trenches, dreams, and moments of reflection. He stood out for his humility, integrity, and unwavering patriotism.”

IBB recounted their relationship dating back to 1962 at the Nigerian Military Training College. He noted that Buhari, in both military and democratic leadership, remained consistent in his principles. “We may not have agreed on everything, but I never doubted his sincerity or patriotism,” he said, praying for Allah to grant Buhari eternal peace.

Former Delta State Governor James Ibori also eulogised Buhari, calling him “a hero and patriot” whose leadership—first as a soldier and later as president—was marked by selflessness and discipline. Ibori said Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development would be remembered for generations.

State governors across Nigeria also mourned the loss. Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, described Buhari as a distinguished leader and embodiment of integrity. “Nigeria has lost a patriot who gave his all to national development,” he said, extending condolences to the Buhari family and President Bola Tinubu.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia praised Buhari’s legacy of integrity and discipline. “He was resolute in his service to the nation, leaving indelible marks both as military leader and elected president,” he said. Alia noted that Buhari prioritized national interest and exemplified courage throughout his career.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expressed deep sorrow at Buhari’s passing. “He was audacious, prudent, contented, and compassionate,” Aiyedatiwa noted. Recalling a recent encounter in Sokoto, the governor said Buhari had a jovial spirit and unwavering faith, adding, “Farewell, great General, patriot, and leader.”

Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu called Buhari’s death a monumental national loss. “His death has left a vacuum difficult to fill,” he said. “He will be remembered for his honesty, discipline, and relentless war against corruption.” The governor noted Buhari’s deep fear of God and moral uprightness.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called Buhari’s death a “colossal loss,” hailing him as a transparent and courageous leader. “He was disciplined, passionate, and committed to Nigeria’s development,” Sanwo-Olu said, praising Buhari’s leadership style and unwavering nationalism.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti also paid tribute, describing the former president as a national treasure. “His death is a loss to the nation,” Otti said, urging the Buhari family to bear the loss with courage and expressing hope that his legacy would endure.

Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji described Buhari as a patriot and anti-corruption icon. “He etched his name in gold through selfless service and a life of integrity,” he said, adding that Buhari made great personal sacrifices for Nigeria’s progress.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Buhari’s political party, mourned his death in a statement by its spokesman, Felix Morka. The party said Buhari was “an iconic elder statesman” whose leadership and discipline shaped Nigeria’s democracy. “He was an unlikely democrat who became a beacon of democratic consolidation,” Morka noted.

APC also highlighted Buhari’s role in founding the party and making history by defeating an incumbent in 2015. “His life of simplicity, patriotism, and integrity will remain evergreen,” the party said.

House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed shock, calling Buhari one of Nigeria’s most patriotic leaders. “He lived a remarkable life of simplicity, incorruptibility, and national service,” Abbas said. He praised Buhari’s decades-long devotion to the country’s well-being.

International condolences came from the African Union Commission (AUC), whose Chairperson, Mahmoud Youssouf, described Buhari as a Pan-Africanist and a champion of regional cooperation. “He was a steadfast advocate of African-led solutions and peace across the continent,” the AUC stated, hailing Buhari’s legacy beyond Nigeria’s borders.

As Nigeria continues to mourn, flags fly at half-mast and condolences pour in from citizens, organisations, and institutions. Former President Buhari is remembered not just as a leader, but as a national symbol of discipline, patriotism, and integrity.
