FIE backs Nigeria for future fencing events

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has praised the Nigerian Fencing Federation for excellently organising the 23rd African Fencing Championships at Charterhouse, Lagos, from June 25–29.
The FIE also revealed plans to consider Nigeria as a future host for international fencing tournaments.
This is contained in a statement yesterday by the Nigerian Fencing Federation (NFF).
FIE Secretary General, Gulnora Saidova, on her first official visit to Africa, commended the high standard of facilities and the warm hospitality throughout the championship.
She stated that the impressive atmosphere and top-notch organisation made Nigeria a strong contender for hosting more global fencing events.
“This is my first time in Nigeria, and I’m truly impressed by the facilities and professionalism of the organisers,” Saidova remarked.
She added, “It has given us confidence that Nigeria can host more international competitions.”
Saidova also praised the Deputy Governor’s dedication to promoting fencing in a nation with great sporting potential.
She was part of a top-level FIE delegation that visited the Lagos State Governor and expressed optimism about fencing’s future in Nigeria.
She highlighted the Lagos State Government’s enthusiasm as a promising indication of institutional support for the sport.
“The facilities show that Nigeria can host even larger tournaments in the future.
“From what I’ve seen these past few days, I’m confident the FIE will seriously consider Nigeria for major events,” she said.
Saidova stressed the need for government involvement in fencing’s development for it to flourish.
“Nigeria is on the right path, but lasting government support is essential for the sport to thrive,” she said.
She urged a sincere commitment to fencing’s development, stating it is crucial for long-term success.
During her visit, she formally asked for fencing to be recognised as a priority sport, especially in Lagos State.
She noted fencing’s potential to aid youth development and support the state’s broader progress.
“Fencing is an Olympic sport and offers Nigeria a great chance to strengthen its Olympic presence.
“I kindly urge the government to officially prioritise fencing in Lagos State,” Saidova appealed.
She urged the government to support hosting an international fencing tournament in Nigeria.
According to her, the FIE aims to position Nigeria as Africa’s fencing hub, boosting the economy and ensuring sustainability. (NAN)
