An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mr Daniel Onjeh, has said that Nigeria has achieved a milestone by enjoying 26 years of uninterrupted democracy.
Onjeh, who is a former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Makurdi.
The APC chieftain said that the tradition of elections being held regularly and the peaceful transitions of government contributed to the country’s democratic standing.
He, however, said that the country is still faced with challenges of corruption and insecurity which need to be addressed to further consolidate our democracy.
Reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, Onjeh expressed hope that the country would get better.
The former NANS president said that Tinubu emphasised the importance of economic reforms, infrastructure development, and social justice in promoting national development and improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“It was a thought-provoking speech that highlighted the President’s vision for Nigeria’s future, but effective implementation will be key to the success of his initiatives.
“Nigeria’s democracy has come a long way, but there’s still work to be done, so we need to focus on building trust between the government and citizens and ensure policies benefit all, especially the most vulnerable.
“With sustained effort, we can further consolidate our democracy and drive development,” Onjeh said.
