Two NGOs, Women Arise and Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), yesterday, called on more women to participate in shaping the country’s future.
President, Women Arise, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, and the President, KIND, Dr Hafsat Abiola, made the call in a joint statement issued in Lagos in remembrance of the late pro-democracy activist- Kudirat Abiola.
The duo saluted the efforts of the late Abiola’s sacrifice in the struggle for democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
Describing the late activist as a heroine and a champion of democracy, the women leaders noted that her conviction and steadfast commitment to the June 12 movement continued to inspire Nigerians.
They urged men to reflect on the positive impact of Abiola and encourage more women to participate in shaping Nigeria’s future, emphasising that collaboration was critical to solving the nation’s challenges.
The leaders highlighted Kudirat’s remarkable contributions to the democracy movement, including her financial support for the oil workers’ strike of 1994 and funding of marches and demonstrations across the country.
According to them, her legacy serves as a reminder that women’s participation in public life is crucial for building a better Nigeria.
“We invite mothers to reflect on their belief that it is not enough to focus solely on raising our children.
“The country we deserve can only come about if we are involved in shaping it.
“The path to public participation is daunting for women, no doubt. However, it is only by showing up and working consistently for a better Nigeria that our reality will improve,” they said.
They emphasised that Kudirat’s legacy remained relevant as the country strives to solve poverty and development challenges.
“We acknowledge that the democracy that she, her husband and many others gave their lives to bring about has endured since the restoration of democracy in 1999.
“We note that Nigeria’s continued struggle to tackle poverty and provide opportunities for all its citizens means that there is still more work to be done.
“May the sacrifices of our heroes’ past not be in vain,” they said. (NAN)
