The Bayelsa State Education Development Trust Fund (BEDTF), on Tuesday, inaugurated 9,000-liters water facilities in two public schools at Brass and Nembe Local Government Areas respectively.
The schools are located in Okpoama, a coastline community near Brass Island, and Agrisaba in Nembe.
Speaking at the inauguration at Okpoama, Chief Nyanayo Tubo, BEDTF Team Lead, said that the project was aimed at providing potable water for schools in the state.
Tubo said that no fewer than 20 schools out of about 220 in the state, had benefitted from the intervention being implemented in partnership with the Sustainable Partnership Initiative for Development (SPID).
“Our goal is to provide clean water for the students, and to improve the hygiene and sanitary standards of the schools,” he said.
Chief Feboke Febo, a representative of Okpoama, commended BEDTF and SPID for the water project, describing it critical to the wellbeing of the students and the school community.
He expressed the willingness of the community to ensure maintenance culture in the usage of the facility.
Chairman, SPID Board of Trustees, Prof Prince Weigha, commended Okpoama Community for the cooperation and support given to the project team.
At the project inauguration in Agrisaba, Mr Richie David, a official of the partner agency, commended the community for its peaceful disposition and support during the implementation of the project
The Director, Exams and Records, Bayelsa Education Ministry, Mr Monday Eke, urged the students and the school community to protect and maintain the water facility.
Students of the benefiting schools were filled with joy following the inauguration of the facilities.
Some of them who spoke to NAN said that the water facility would improve their personal hygiene and the general sanitary state of the schools.
