The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a warrant for the arrest of the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), following his failure to honor multiple summons by the lawmakers.
During a plenary session on Monday, the Assembly resolved to take legal action after the RSIEC chairman ignored a 72-hour ultimatum to appear before the House. Lawmakers had initially given him 48 hours to respond but extended the deadline to allow him to provide explanations regarding the controversial October 2024 local government elections, which were later nullified.
Despite expectations that Enebeli would appear alongside other RSIEC Commissioners, none of them honored the summons. Instead, they filed a lawsuit at the Rivers State High Court, challenging the resolutions of the Assembly.
The House insists that Enebeli must be held accountable, emphasizing that his refusal to appear undermines the legislature’s oversight functions. The unfolding situation adds to the ongoing political tensions in the state.
