Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long association with the party he helped to found.

In a letter dated Monday, July 14, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate departure from the party, citing a divergence from the core principles on which the PDP was founded.

“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” the former Vice President wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku, who served two terms as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and ran twice as PDP’s presidential candidate, expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities he had within the party but noted “irreconcilable differences” as his reason for leaving.
