A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos on Wednesday February 12, 2025 sentenced a 24-year-old welder, Augustine Chinonso, to 18 months in prison for stealing a cell phone.
The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Delivering his judgment, Bokkos ordered the convict to pay an option of N20, 000 fine or spend six months in prison and also to pay a compensation of N250, 000, in default of which he is to spend another one year in prison.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Dec. 12, 2024 at the `A `Division Police Station by Mustapha Umar, the complainant.
Gokwat said that the convict was given the phone, valued at N250, 000, to make a quick call but he ran away with the phone.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.(NAN
