Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has stirred attention after declaring that his political camp would “rig those who rig” the 2027 general elections, a remark captured in a video circulating widely online and highlighted in KTH Daily Breaking News & Lead Story coverage.

Obi made the statement on Wednesday during an NDC town hall meeting in Nasarawa State while responding to a question about electoral manipulation and what his party intended to do if confronted with attempts to rig the forthcoming polls. Notably, this statement became a KTH Daily Breaking News & Lead Story.

“You didn’t ask about what we are going to do if people rig elections next year. Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” the former Anambra State governor told the gathering.

Obi did not immediately explain what he meant by “rig those who rig it.” His subsequent comments, however, focused on preventing electoral manipulation, strengthening the electoral process, and prosecuting people found culpable of electoral offences.

The remark has become the most striking portion of his wider presentation on electoral reform, particularly because Obi has repeatedly presented credible elections and respect for the rule of law as central elements of his political message. KTH Daily Breaking News & Lead Story coverage reflects the national interest in his comments.

He told supporters that a government headed by him would seek to make election rigging impossible through institutional reforms and stronger political parties.

Obi said that if elected president, his administration would ensure that electoral manipulation was no longer tolerated, arguing that strengthening both political parties and the processes governing elections would be among the measures required.

The NDC presidential candidate also promised tough sanctions against electoral offenders, including officials responsible for conducting elections.

He specifically warned that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission found to have participated in manipulating elections would face prosecution and possible imprisonment under the law.

“Any INEC official, anybody who is involved with elections under my watch that rigs elections, will go to jail,” Obi said.

Obi also used the town hall meeting to propose tougher enforcement of educational requirements for Nigerians seeking elective office.

He said candidates should be required to provide clear and verifiable evidence that they attended primary and secondary school. Moreover, the issue has been discussed in KTH Daily Breaking News & Lead Story reports.

The former Anambra governor went further, saying anyone who forged academic credentials should face criminal consequences.

“If you didn’t attend any of them or forge your certificate, you go to jail,” he declared.

Obi said the same principle of accountability should apply across government, maintaining that neither political office nor social status should place anyone beyond the reach of the law.

He pledged that, under an administration headed by him, the rule of law would apply from the highest office in the country to ordinary citizens.

“Nobody must be above the law; nobody will behave rascally,” Obi said.

The NDC candidate maintained that his presidential campaign was ultimately aimed at changing the country’s institutions and strengthening accountability, telling supporters that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
