Some football fans have applauded Nigeria’s female U-17 national team, the Flamingos, following their 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Speaking in separate interviews yesterday in Lagos, they said that the team worked hard to secure a crucial victory, earning their first three valuable points in the group stage.
The fans said the victory would boost the players’ confidence ahead of their final group match against North Korea, as they seek to qualify for the knockout stage.
Tope Falana, a football fan, described the encounter as tough but commended the Flamingos for rising to the occasion.
She said the team deserved the victory and urged the players to maintain their confidence ahead of their final group match.
“They are a great team. They played with confidence and a strong belief in their teamwork, which helped them rise to the occasion.
“I have confidence in them despite North Korea’s dominance in the group after claiming six points from two matches.
“Their final group game will not be easy, but they can work harder as a team to defeat North Korea and qualify for the knockout stage,” Falana said.
Seun Osibote, another football fan, described the Flamingos as hardworking players who understood the importance of teamwork in achieving positive results.
She expressed confidence that the team could produce another convincing performance in their crucial final group match.
“When I saw what they did against Puerto Rico, I believed they could pull off surprises if the opportunity arises.
“They are a good team, filled with courageous young ladies determined to do well whenever the occasion arises,” Osibote said.
Ngozi Okafor, another football fan, described the victory over Puerto Rico without conceding a goal as crucial, adding that the team could perform well against other opponents.
“The team is good, and they grow in confidence with every game. Even though they lost their first match, I still have faith in them.
“If they approach the game with seriousness and determination, they can achieve great things in this tournament,” Okafor said.
Femi Fawaz, a grassroots football coach in Lagos, described the Flamingos as a determined side with the quality to deliver positive results.
“I have a lot of confidence in these players. They can produce surprises, and we can count on them to do what will make us proud.
“They are technically sound, quick and compact in defence. I believe they have what it takes to reach the knockout stage,” Fawaz said.
Nigeria will face North Korea on Friday, hoping to secure the points needed to advance to the next round.
North Korea has dominated Group B, thrashing Puerto Rico 6-0 and defeating Poland 6-1.
Poland’s heavy defeat has also given Nigeria a favourable goal-difference position ahead of the final group matches.
A draw against North Korea would guarantee Nigeria a top-two finish in the group, regardless of the outcome of the Poland versus Puerto Rico match.
However, a defeat would leave Nigeria on three points, potentially forcing the team to rely on the best third-placed teams’ standings to progress to the knockout stage.
The Flamingos will therefore need a determined performance against North Korea to strengthen their chances of advancing in the competition.
