Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Monday fulfilled his N50 million scholarship promise to Miss Davina Ogheneovo, a Junior Technical Two student of Model Technical College, Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area.
The governor received Miss Davina Ogheneovo, her mother, the School Principal, the Local Government Council Chairman, the Commissioner for Technical Education and others, in Government House, Asaba, after Davina’s impressive extempore speech at the inauguration of the College last Friday.
Oborevwori said the award was part of his administration’s commitment to promoting education and rewarding excellence, stressing that education remained a lasting legacy.
He recalled that Delta students who emerged world champions at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, received N20 million each, adding that the state also recognises outstanding university graduates.
According to him, Davina’s confidence and eloquence, despite attempts to distract her during her speech, informed his decision to support her education.
“Education remains with you for life. You may acquire wealth and other things, but education is the best legacy you can give your children,” he said.
The governor directed that the scholarship be paid into a dedicated account operated by her parents exclusively for Davina’s education, adding that she would operate the account when she turns 18.
He assured the student and her parents that the scholarship would cover her education through the technical college and university, easing the family’s financial burden.
Oborevwori also recounted a previous intervention in which he rescued an abused boy and offered him a scholarship. He said the boy had completed secondary school and was now at university, reaffirming his commitment to supporting vulnerable children.
Davina, who aspires to become a medical doctor, thanked the governor for the scholarship and commended his administration for providing modern facilities at the college. She pledged to remain focused on her studies and justify the confidence reposed in her.
Her mother, Mrs Berkeley Ogheneovo, described the award as an unexpected gesture that would support her daughter’s education through university.
She said she chose the technical college because of her belief in technical education and its potential to equip young people with practical skills.
The Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr Smart Ufoh, said the scholarship reflected the government’s commitment to educational development and supporting promising students.
The Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Christian Onogba, commended the governor for siting the college in the area, saying it would equip young people with skills for self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
He pledged the council’s support in protecting the school’s infrastructure, urging residents to take ownership of the institution and preserve its facilities.
