Kannywood actress and political figure Fati Muhammad has opened up about her decision to distance herself from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, citing what she described as “lies and broken promises”.

Fati said she had followed Atiku politically since 2007 and claimed that her long association with him gave her enough insight into his political style to question some of his promises.

“Since 2007, I have been with Atiku in politics, and lies and broken promises have been what separated me from him,” she said.

She specifically recalled Atiku’s position on fuel subsidy, saying she immediately dismissed his promise to restore the subsidy because she believed she knew what he was capable of delivering.

“That is why, when Atiku said he would bring back fuel subsidy in Nigeria, I immediately said, ‘Wallahi, he is lying; he cannot do it,’ because I know who he is,” she said.

Fati’s comments come as political activity intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Her past political association with Atiku is documented, including her appointment as the North West women’s director of the Atiku Care Foundation in 2017.

The actress has also recently attracted attention over her political shift. A report published on October 6 said she publicly urged her supporters to vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Her latest comments therefore offer further context to her changing political position, particularly given her previous association with Atiku and her recent public support for Tinubu.

Fati did not provide evidence in the remarks reported to independently establish her claims about Atiku’s promises, presenting them as her personal assessment based on her experience of following his political career.
