Media personality Linda Ikeji has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Margaret Obi, wife of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, after she was photographed carrying a Hermes Kelly 35 Malachite bag.

The luxury handbag sparked debate online, with some Nigerians questioning the decision to carry such an expensive accessory given Peter Obi’s well known advocacy for reducing the cost of governance in Nigeria.

Reacting to the backlash, Linda Ikeji urged Nigerians to stop assuming that the bag was worth ₦250 million, insisting that she knows the prices of Hermes bags because she owns some herself.

“Relax people, this is not a ₦250m bag. If it was, you think she would be travelling with it? I know how much these bags cost, because I have a few. Relax,” she said.

The controversy intensified after the bag was identified as a Hermes Kelly 35 Malachite and listed at £131,938.81 on the official Hermes website, a figure that would amount to roughly ₦237 million based on current exchange rates.
