A MESSAGE TO OUR READERS

Dear Readers,

I wish to inform you that, following my appointment as one of the spokespersons for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Council, I have decided to step back from my role as Publisher and from the day-to-day editorial direction of Keeping Them Honest Daily (KTH Daily).

I have never concealed my political convictions. I am a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and have been a vigorous and unapologetic supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration. Our readers have always known where I stand.

But there is an important distinction between holding and openly expressing political convictions and accepting a formal responsibility as a spokesman for a presidential campaign.

My appointment places me directly within the campaign structure, with a responsibility to articulate, defend, and advance the case for President Tinubu’s re-election. I believe it would therefore create an avoidable conflict of interest—or, at the very least, a reasonable perception of one—for me to continue exercising editorial control over a newspaper that must report on the President, his administration, his opponents, and the 2027 electoral contest.

For that reason, I am stepping aside.

With immediate effect, the editorial team of KTH Daily will assume full responsibility for the newspaper’s news judgement, headlines, commentary, political coverage, and other editorial decisions, without interference from me.

This is particularly important because KTH Daily was founded on a principle captured in its very name: Keeping Them Honest.

That obligation must extend to government and opposition, incumbents and challengers, political allies and adversaries. It must also extend to those of us associated with the newspaper.

My membership of the APC and support for President Tinubu have never been hidden from our readers, and I do not renounce either by taking this decision. Indeed, I undertake my new assignment with conviction and with a determination to make the strongest possible case for the President and his record before the Nigerian people.

But the newspaper must be free to report the Tinubu administration and campaign critically where the facts demand it, just as it must scrutinise the opposition and every other participant in our national life. My new political responsibilities should not confer undue editorial advantage or indeed disadvantage on the campaign I represent, nor impose the same on those who oppose it.

Credibility is journalism’s most valuable asset. Protecting it sometimes requires creating sufficient distance between individual or group interest and the newsroom’s independent judgement.
That is the purpose of my decision.

I remain enormously proud of what we have built at KTH Daily in just over one year, and grateful to our journalists, contributors, partners, and, most importantly, our readers.

As I take up this new responsibility, I ask you to continue holding KTH Daily to the standards its name demands as the newsroom does its job and I release myself to do mine.

I thank you immensely for your trust and continued support.
