Delta Assembly Seeks Stronger Financial Accountability at Councils

The Delta House of Assembly has called for stronger financial accountability and improved revenue generation across the state’s 25 Local Government Areas.
The call followed the consideration and adoption of recommendations by the House Committee on Public Accounts on the Auditor-General for Local Governments’ report during plenary on Tuesday.
The report covered the financial statements of the 25 local government areas for the financial year ended December 2025.
Presenting the committee’s findings and observations, its Chairman, Mr James Augoye, urged councils to intensify efforts toward improving their internally generated revenue.
Augoye also called for strict compliance with relevant local government laws, financial regulations and accounting guidelines to promote prudent management of public resources.
The House unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations through a voice vote.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Dennis Guwor, commended the committee for thorough examination of the councils’ financial statements and recommendations.
He said the committee’s work would contribute to strengthening accountability and responsible financial management at the grassroots.
The speaker stressed the importance of effective financial controls at the local government level to ensure public resources were properly managed.
He said improved accountability would enhance the capacity of councils to deliver meaningful development projects and services to residents.
The adoption of the recommendations underscored the assembly’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and compliance with financial regulations in local government administration.
