The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers linked to the killing of 22 year old University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt.
Obodo was shot dead on August 27, 2026, at the Agip Ada George Junction in Port Harcourt, an incident that sparked protests by youths and community members demanding justice and accountability.
According to witnesses and members of Obodo’s family, police officers flagged down his vehicle and allegedly opened fire after pursuing him when he failed to stop immediately.
The police, however, gave a different account, stating that a scuffle and altercation occurred before the fatal shot was fired. Two passers by were also reportedly injured during the incident.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, announced on Wednesday that three officers had been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force after being found culpable.
“The officers being paraded today have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court,” Adepoju said.
The Commissioner added that the dismissed officers would face criminal prosecution over their alleged roles in Obodo’s death.
Meanwhile, an Inspector who allegedly fled the scene following the shooting has been declared a deserter by the command.
The police said further action would be taken against the officer.
The killing triggered demonstrations across parts of Port Harcourt, with protesters blocking Agip Road and sections of the East West Road around Ada George.
Family members and protesters have continued to demand a transparent investigation and the swift prosecution of those found responsible for the death.
The police command has yet to disclose the specific charges against the three dismissed officers or announce a date for their arraignment.
